Oh I can’t wait to see this film about Anselm Kiefer, an intense German artist.
From the explanatory statement from the Japan Art Association’s Paraemium Imperiale awarded to Kiefer for his lifetime achievements:
Only a few contemporary artists have such a pronounced sense of art’s duty to engage the past and the ethical questions of the present, and are in the position to express the possibility of the absolution of guilt through human effort.
It’s fascinating and frustrating to witness some forms of contemporary art that sharply capture man’s sinful nature, but such art mostly refuses to take the next step in finding God’s grace through His Gospel message.
