then and now

then and now

That’s a sculpture of Sophocles. It’s over two thousand five hundred years old. Just look at it. He looks like he’s speaking in mid-sentence… from 2,500 years ago. That this representation of realness and life has survived 25 centuries in such wonderful condition just blows my mind. It’s quite possible that someone’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather made that. revising the English language

How about all words in the English language be spelled the way they sound? We’d have a considerably larger alphabet with all the upside down letters and whatnot. But words like “barrage” would look a lot more interesting: bəˈrZH. Yeah. bəˈrZH.

nifty pencil shavings

nifty pencil shavings

Sam Winston’s pencil shavings image is visual poetry. I’m not sure if it’s an actual pencil drawing (which would be mad crazy) or if it’s a photograph (or scan) of pencil shavings. The title is, “Pencil Drawing”. Either way, it’s a nice piece. I did a similar piece with gator clips about 7 years ago. […]

vacuums and pixels

“Operating a vacuum cleaner is much like building a digital photograph one pixel at a time.”-erik maldre, 2008 I love the pronunciation key for “vacuum”. It’s vak-yoom. That just looks like a cool world. vak-yoom. Though yak-voom is even better.

Chicago putting pedestrians and drivers at risk

Chicago putting pedestrians and drivers at risk

There’s a misleading statement on chicagopedsafety.org. The large headline states, “Drivers must stop for pedestrians entering a crosswalk. It’s the law.” The image above shows the marketing piece taken directly from their website (scaled down 50%). For this blog post, I added the actual law from the Illinois Vehicle Code below their banner. The right […]

crucifix or kitty cat stamp

Recently I purchased a crucifix for $5.69 (shipping included) on ebay. I might be receiving a kitty cat stamp instead. Curious thing. The seller sent me a message saying “the stamp” has been shipped and the following warm message, “May you enjoy the use of the stamp.” Here’s my reply:“I’m in no hurry to receive […]
